Project Detail

The Cartwheel Club community centre in Elland, West Yorkshire, was closed during the pandemic. Since being awarded 2 million from the Government’s Future High Street Fund, as part of a 6 million revamp to the town centre, it has been transformed into a welcoming and inclusive hub where all the community can connect and get access to facilities including free broadband.

AJS were thrilled to win the contract (through a competitive tender process) to design and build all the electrical services.

We stripped back the whole building before installing new power outlets throughout, Cat6 Data infrastructure, and complete LED lighting including feature lighting internally and externally. We installed a robust security system featuring access control, burglar alarm, CCTV, as well as accessible toilet alarms. We completed this with a new L1 addressable fire alarm – which is the most comprehensive, maximum life protection automated system.

Our involvement in this project lasted for 10 months, as we negotiated the various complexities such as: working on a stunning but once-neglected 1875 building; the requirement for a new electrical supply by Northern Powergrid; and restrictions such as no surface containment.

The works concluded with us testing and commissioning; issuing certification and a full operations and maintenance manual; and conducting a client demonstration. As we handed over, we felt gratified to have contributed to Elland’s regeneration.
